This past summer we went on our annual family vacation with six adults and three small children. One evening we decided to take the boat and go to dinner down the Chesapeake Bay. We docked and went to dinner. Approximately two hours later we went back to the boat, but it wasn’t there. With no transportation, two of us hitchhiked back to where we were staying. We returned for the rest of the family and finally got all of us back to the house. That was the start of the family vacation that turned into a nightmare.
Our boat was found the next day, after significant damage to the boat, two other boats and an injured person in the hospital. Witnesses reported three men in our boat at a high rate of speed while it went by a group of people swimming next to their boat. Our boat reportedly turned sharply to avoid hitting one person in the water and struck another swimmer before it sped away and out of sight.
Much of that day was spent with police. Since no one knew who was in the boat, the police took extensive measures to determine that it wasn’t us. I hope no one ever has to go through something like this. The annual family vacation turned into a nightmare that ruined the entire week.
We never could have imagined that this would have happened to us.
